Arkansas PBS Ends Affiliation with PBS: What You Need to Know (2026)

Arkansas poised to part ways with PBS affiliation and rebrand to Arkansas TV

CONWAY, Ark. — Arkansas’ statewide public broadcasting network has announced it will terminate its partnership with PBS beginning in July 2026, a move disclosed by the Arkansas Educational Television Commission this week.

The station, previously branded as Arkansas PBS, will adopt the name Arkansas TV as part of the transition.

The commission cited a $2.5 million drop in annual federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the ongoing cost of PBS membership dues as key reasons for ending the affiliation. In a news release, officials described PBS membership dues as “simply not feasible.”

Programming is expected to remain largely the same through June 30, 2026. After that date, Arkansas TV plans to roll out locally produced content, including new children’s shows, food and history series still in development, alongside popular programs from the past six decades.

Executive Director and CEO Carlton Wing emphasized that public television is not disappearing in Arkansas. He framed the shift as a pivot toward more local programming, continued preparedness through emergency coverage, and support for K-12 educators and students. The station intends to broaden support from individual donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors who recognize the value of investing in locally relevant content for the state.

Despite the change, PBS content will remain accessible to Arkansas residents through other platforms, per Arkansas TV’s statement (PBS app and related services).

PBS reacted to the announcement via a spokesperson who told Nexstar’s KNWA that ending the membership is a setback for Arkansans who rely on free, over-the-air access to PBS programming. PBS referenced a June 2025 YouGov survey indicating strong statewide support for PBS, noting that most respondents opposed funding cuts and valued PBS for children’s programming, national news and public affairs, science, history, and nature content, local and regional programming, and weather/emergency alerts.

PBS also confirmed to the Associated Press that Arkansas is the first state to definitively sever ties with the broadcaster. Alabama had considered a similar move but decided to maintain its PBS contract amid public pushback from viewers and donors.

The shift away from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting reflects broader political dynamics around public media funding and oversight. Critics warn that reducing or restructuring CPB’s funding could reshape the journalistic and cultural landscape, especially for small, rural communities that rely on local public radio and TV stations.

CPB remains a major funder for PBS and NPR, but its grants support more than 1,500 local public media outlets nationwide.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
