Arulvaan Movie Review: A Critique of One-Dimensional Storytelling & Social Commentary (1.5/5) (2026)

Arulvaan, a film with a noble intention to shed light on the struggles of tribal communities, falls short of its potential due to a myriad of issues. While the director, Ganesh Vinayakan, attempted to immerse the audience in the Kaadar tribal language, the execution was half-hearted. The film's unidimensionality is evident in every aspect, from the wooden performances to the sappy dialogues that feel more like a theatrical play than a cinematic experience. The director's effort to have the actors speak the Kaadar tribal language is commendable, but it is undermined by the constant need for translation, which disrupts the flow of the film. The performances, particularly that of Arulnithi and Kritika, are the only bright spots in an otherwise dull film. However, the director's decision to have Ramya Pandian play the adult version of Kurinji in the climax feels unearned and robs the character of its emotional impact. The film's desperation to shove its message down the audience's throat is evident in the awkward dialogue choices and the use of news clips during the credits, which, while impactful, feel out of place. Overall, Arulvaan is a film that fails to respect the medium of cinema, resulting in a film that is more of a PSA than a compelling narrative. Personally, I think that the film's unidimensionality and awkward dialogue choices are its biggest flaws. What makes this particularly fascinating is the film's attempt to address a serious issue, but its execution falls flat. In my opinion, the film's failure to immerse the audience in the tribal community's struggles is its biggest shortcoming. From my perspective, the film's unidimensionality is a result of its lack of depth and nuance. One thing that immediately stands out is the film's reliance on cliches and sappy dialogue, which takes away from its intended impact. What many people don't realize is that the film's unidimensionality is a result of its director's inability to respect the medium of cinema. If you take a step back and think about it, the film's failure to immerse the audience in the tribal community's struggles is a result of its lack of creativity and innovation. This raises a deeper question: can a film with a noble intention truly succeed if it fails to respect the medium of cinema? A detail that I find especially interesting is the film's use of news clips during the credits. What this really suggests is that the film's director was more interested in making a statement than in telling a compelling story. The film's unidimensionality and awkward dialogue choices are a result of its director's inability to respect the medium of cinema and tell a compelling story. The film's desperation to shove its message down the audience's throat is a result of its lack of creativity and innovation.
