ESPN's 2026 MLB Opener: Mets at Dodgers on Jackie Robinson Day | What to Expect (2026)

ESPN's 2026 Baseball Broadcasts: A Historic Start and Streaming Revolution!

ESPN is kicking off its 2026 Major League Baseball (MLB) coverage with a bang! The sports network has announced its first broadcast of the season, and it's a historic one. On April 15, the channel will showcase the Los Angeles Dodgers, fresh off their second consecutive World Series win, hosting the New York Mets on the revered Jackie Robinson Day.

But that's not all—ESPN has some exciting plans for the upcoming season. The network has revealed its lineup, which includes 30 games, primarily scheduled for weeknights and summer evenings. And here's where it gets interesting: ESPN is shaking things up with a new three-year deal.

The deal grants ESPN the rights to MLB.TV, the out-of-market streaming package, and in-market streaming rights for six teams: San Diego, Colorado, Arizona, Cleveland, Minnesota, and Seattle. This means fans will have more ways to watch their favorite teams, but it also raises questions about the future of traditional TV broadcasts.

The network will also air a special Memorial Day game between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals, adding a patriotic touch to the schedule. And for the first time, the second-half opener between the Mets and Philadelphia Phillies will be featured, along with the MLB Little League Classic, bringing the excitement of the big leagues to young fans in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

"We're thrilled to offer our viewers a unique blend of traditional and streaming experiences," said Julie Sobieski, ESPN's senior VP. "Our linear package, with its exclusive events, will enhance the extensive streaming rights we've acquired."

ESPN is clearly embracing the digital age, but will this strategy pay off? Only time will tell. What do you think about ESPN's new approach to broadcasting MLB games? Is this the future of sports viewing, or a controversial move that might divide fans?
