HS2 Euston: The Final Stretch - Tunnelling Begins for High-Speed Railway (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling journey as we delve into the latest developments of the HS2 project!

The HS2 Story: Unlocking London's Potential

Ministers are confident that the redeveloped Euston HS2 station will become a vital hub, catering to the nation's transportation needs. With the final tunnelling phase underway, this ambitious project is taking shape. But here's where it gets controversial: the costs have escalated, and the design has been revamped multiple times.

The 4.5-mile tunnel excavation from Old Oak Common in West London is expected to take between a year and a half to two years. During this time, the government aims to engage with potential developers and partners for Euston, envisioning a blend of public and private investment focused on affordable housing, job creation, and commercial opportunities.

Rail Minister Peter Hendy and Darren Jones, Keir Starmer's Chief Secretary, initiated the process by switching on the first of two massive German-made tunnel boring machines at the Old Oak Common station site. Hendy highlighted that the new station's design, which has undergone significant changes under the previous government, is now virtually finalized, potentially accommodating more than the initially planned six high-speed platforms.

"The spatial design leaves room for expansion," Hendy explained. "It's unthinkable to build such an expensive railway without maximizing its potential by filling it with trains serving all corners of Britain."

Hendy further emphasized the connection between HS2 and the rest of Britain's railways, envisioning trains departing Euston for most of northern England.

Darren Jones echoed the commitment of the Labour government to get HS2 back on track, stating, "Finishing the tunnel will unlock enormous development opportunities for London, benefiting the broader economy."

Last week, HS2 celebrated the completion of its longest tunnelling project, the 10-mile Chiltern tunnels, and two other sets of tunnels in London have also been fully excavated.

Mark Wild, CEO of HS2 Ltd, expressed confidence that the start of tunnelling into central London will kickstart economic growth. He has been working on a "reset" plan, restating the project's timeline and budget, which is expected to be approved and released soon.

Wild emphasized the importance of thorough preparation, stating, "The key lesson from HS2's early challenges is not to rush. Go slow to go fast."

Initially, HS2 trains will operate between Birmingham and the new Old Oak Common station. The extension to Euston was suspended in 2023 when Rishi Sunak axed the second phase of HS2 north of Birmingham to Manchester. However, Chancellor Rachel Reeves gave the green light in late 2024 to extend HS2 to Euston, recognizing its significance in unlocking the project's full economic potential.

Camden Council estimates suggest that a combination of new homes and commercial development around a rebuilt Euston could contribute £41 billion to the economy by 2053, supporting 34,000 new jobs.

And this is the part most people miss: the potential impact of HS2 on London's economy and transportation network.

What are your thoughts on the HS2 project? Do you think it will revolutionize travel and development in the UK, or is it a costly endeavor with uncertain benefits? Let's discuss in the comments!
