Hold onto your bows and arrows, Hunger Games fans! Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are reportedly returning to Panem! The dynamic duo, known for their iconic roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, are set to reappear in the upcoming film, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. This marks the sixth installment in the blockbuster franchise, promising a thrilling return to the world we all love.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pair's involvement is confirmed, suggesting their characters might be featured in a flash-forward sequence. Remember the end of Mockingjay – Part 2 (released in 2015)? Katniss and Peeta, married with children, finally found peace. Could Sunrise on the Reaping offer us a glimpse into their future?
Sunrise on the Reaping draws its inspiration from Suzanne Collins' novel, set to be released in 2025. It's the second prequel in the series, following The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (released in 2023), also based on a Collins novel. Francis Lawrence, who directed almost all of the previous films, is also on board for this one.
The film's timeline places it 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games and a whopping 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The story centers around Haymitch Abernathy, a tribute in the 50th Hunger Games, who later becomes Katniss's mentor. Jesse Plemons will be stepping into the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, previously played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Ralph Fiennes will portray a younger version of President Snow, originally brought to life by Donald Sutherland.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the return of Lawrence and Hutcherson is exciting, how will their characters fit into a story centered around Haymitch's Games? Will it feel forced, or will it add a new layer of depth to the narrative?
In the meantime, Jennifer Lawrence is currently starring in Die My Love, where she has received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Josh Hutcherson is also making waves with Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which topped the North American box office on December 5th.
Filming for Sunrise on the Reaping began in the summer of 2025 and wrapped in November, according to producer Nina Jacobson. The highly anticipated film is slated for release in November 2026.
