Election integrity is under the microscope! Conservative Party presidential candidate Elton Joseph Mabirizi is sounding the alarm, and his concerns are raising eyebrows across the political landscape. He's not mincing words, vowing to take decisive action against any attempts to manipulate the upcoming elections. But what's got him so worked up?
It all boils down to the newly imported electoral equipment. Mabirizi is openly questioning its security, suggesting it might already be compromised. He's even gone so far as to express his dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission's handling of the situation.
And this is the part most people miss... Mabirizi is urging voters to brace themselves for potential internet and social media shutdowns during the election period. He's advising people to secure small analogue phones to stay connected if digital communication is cut off.
Addressing residents of Kiruuli Village in Nakaseke District, Mabirizi didn't hold back. He pointed out that the Commission's chairperson is a presidential appointee, making it difficult to ensure full accountability. "Some of it may already be compromised, and it is hard to pin the Chairperson because he is appointed by the President," he stated.
But that's not all. Mabirizi is also making some bold promises. He's positioning himself as the best person to fight corruption decisively if elected. On the topic of governance, he plans to reduce the number of Members of Parliament, arguing that the current figure of over 500 is unsustainable and a drain on resources. He believes the money saved could be better used to improve essential services like schools and hospitals.
But here's where it gets controversial... Mabirizi didn't shy away from criticizing the ruling party's handling of the greater Luweero region, calling it the “NRM’s Mecca.” He highlighted persistent land grabbing and underdevelopment, stating, “Luweero still has poor roads, yet you fought to bring this government into power. NRM is very ungrateful; you need to see change.”
As Uganda gears up for election day, Mabirizi continues his campaign trail in the greater Luweero region, making his case to the voters.
