In a bold move that heightens tensions in Eastern Europe, Russia has announced the deployment of its new nuclear-capable missile system in Belarus. This declaration comes on the heels of Moscow's assertion that Ukraine conducted a significant drone strike on President Vladimir Putin’s residence, raising questions about the ongoing conflict between these nations.
Recent footage released by Russia's Ministry of Defense showcases the Oreshnik missile system navigating through a snowy landscape. Soldiers were depicted camouflaging military vehicles with green netting and hoisting flags at an airbase situated in eastern Belarus, not far from the Russian border.
This display appears to be part of a strategic effort to instill fear across Europe and potentially prepare the Russian populace for an escalation in the already intense warfare against Ukraine. If these claims hold true, the deployment would significantly shorten the time frame for a Russian missile to reach any European capital, amplifying the sense of urgency in the region.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has stated that his country will host ten of these Oreshnik missile systems. During a meeting with his military leaders, Putin confirmed their active deployment, reiterating his ambitions to seize more Ukrainian territory, particularly eyeing the crucial southern city of Zaporizhzhia.
Adding to the tension, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov issued a stark warning that “reprisals” against Kyiv would follow, claiming that plans for specific targets were already in place. This came after he alleged that on Sunday night, 91 Ukrainian drones had attacked Putin’s palace in the Novgorod region.
However, the Kremlin has yet to provide any credible evidence to substantiate these allegations. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for Putin, mentioned that no proof would be forthcoming as all missiles allegedly involved had been intercepted. He refrained from commenting on the absence of debris from such a purportedly significant aerial incident.
Residents in the vicinity reported no sounds of explosions or anti-aircraft fire, as noted by independent Russian media outlet Sota. Additionally, there were no air raid alerts issued, and the typical social media clips showcasing smoke and flames from confirmed attacks were notably absent.
On the other hand, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha dismissed Russia's claims as fabrications and urged the international community to disregard them. He pointed out that nearly a full day had passed since the accusations surfaced without any credible evidence being presented, asserting that no such attack ever occurred.
Interestingly, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for Russia's narrative, recounting a conversation with Putin where the Russian leader claimed knowledge of an attack. Trump remarked on the inappropriateness of such offensive actions at this time, emphasizing the need for caution in the ongoing geopolitical landscape.
Sybiha also expressed frustration toward India, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates for their concerns regarding the situation, arguing that such responses only fuel Russian propaganda and encourage further aggression.
Ukrainian military officials have reported that Russian kamikaze drones frequently cross over areas near a government residence used by Zelenskyy en route to the capital. One officer from a territorial defense unit indicated that they had successfully intercepted two drones above the state residence just recently, reinforcing the persistent threat faced by Ukraine.
In light of these developments, Ukraine remains focused on diplomatic avenues to resolve the conflict. Following a two-hour discussion with Trump in Florida, Zelenskyy is pushing for a 20-point peace plan that would secure post-war support from the U.S., contingent upon congressional approval.
The fate of the contested eastern Donbas region remains a pressing issue; Putin insists it must be surrendered to Russia, while Zelenskyy firmly rejects any territorial concessions. He has proposed establishing a demilitarized zone, which could be validated through a referendum, should Russia agree to a ceasefire lasting at least 60 days.
Zelenskyy attributed Russia's allegations to a desire to undermine his recent productive discussions with Trump and the strides made by U.S. and Ukrainian delegations in the past weeks, viewing these claims as an attempt to disrupt any positive outcomes.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is set to meet with European allies on January 6 in France, during a conference hosted by Emmanuel Macron. Discussions will center around Europe's role in a peacekeeping operation, with potential follow-up meetings involving European leaders and Trump's administration in Washington.
Commentators have raised concerns regarding U.S. security assurances, suggesting they may be ineffective if Trump is willing to accept Russia's narrative uncritically. Phillips O’Brien, a professor of strategic studies at the University of St Andrews, warned, "If those monitoring a potential ceasefire believe Russia’s claims, we could be facing significant challenges ahead."
