A significant weather event has been declared for Sault Ste. Marie as winter conditions intensify.
Environment Canada has issued a hazardous snow squall warning that will remain in effect from Saturday night through Sunday morning. Expect 20 to 35 cm of new snow, with higher amounts possible in localized bands, and greatly reduced visibility in areas with heavy snowfall and blowing snow. Travel will be dangerous, and roads and sidewalks will be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
Important clarification: this declaration does not imply that roads are closed or that city services have been reduced. It serves to alert residents to exercise extra caution when traveling on city-maintained routes. Restoring conditions to optimal levels may take longer than usual. Public Works will monitor the weather and dispatch all available crews to manage snow and ice buildup. During a significant weather event, all roads and sidewalks maintained by the city are considered to be in a “state of repair.”
Motorists should drive for the conditions and give operators of heavy equipment ample room to clear and sand roadways safely and efficiently. The winter parking by-law remains in effect: on-city streets are not permitted for parking between midnight and 6 a.m. during the winter months. Additionally, during a winter event, vehicles should not park on city streets or block sidewalks during the day to aid snow removal.
Transit services may experience delays due to the adverse conditions.
City updates will be posted as needed on the official website and the city’s social media channels. Thank you for your cooperation.
