South West England Faces Second Rain Weather Warning: What to Expect (2026)

The South West of England is bracing for yet another round of heavy rainfall, as the Met Office has issued a second rain weather warning for the region. This comes after the area was already battered by Storm Ingrid and Storm Chandra, which caused significant flooding and disruption. The second warning, valid from 09:00 on Friday to 06:00 on Saturday, predicts further rainfall that could lead to travel issues in Devon and Cornwall, as well as potential flooding for buildings facing the sea. But here's where it gets controversial... The Met Office's forecast suggests that the rain will be 'heavy at times', with 10 to 20mm of rainfall expected, and up to 30mm possible over the moors and west Cornwall. This could exacerbate existing flooding in the area, as the ground is already saturated. The first warning period, which has had its end time moved forward from 03:00 on Friday, also warned of rain exacerbating flooding in places. The first warning area covers Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset, and Wiltshire, and the Environment Agency has issued flood warnings and alerts for several rivers and roads in the region. The RNLI has also issued a warning about sea swell forecasts for coastal areas, predicting potential waves of up to 15ft (4.5m) that could cause sudden surges up beaches and over sea fronts and harbour walls. So, while the Met Office's warnings are necessary to keep people safe, they also highlight the ongoing challenges the South West faces in managing the impact of heavy rainfall and storms. And this is the part most people miss... The region's infrastructure and natural environment are under constant pressure from extreme weather events, and the need for better flood defenses and more sustainable land management practices is becoming increasingly clear.
