Yilo Krobo's Farmers' Day: Celebrating Food Security and Agricultural Excellence (2026)

Ghana's Agricultural Revolution: Yilo Krobo Celebrates Farmers' Dedication to Food Security

The farming community of Yilo Krobo is at the forefront of a national movement, striving to secure Ghana's future through agricultural innovation and local empowerment. On December 5, 2025, the municipality proudly marked the 41st Farmers' Day, honoring the tireless efforts of farmers like Jonas Tetteh Numo, who was crowned the Overall Best Farmer.

But this celebration was more than just an award ceremony. It was a testament to the renewed commitment of Yilo Krobo and Ghana as a whole to modernize agriculture and ensure food security. The event, themed 'Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,' gathered key figures, including MP Albert Tetteh Nyakotey and MCE Francis Akumatey, alongside traditional leaders and community members, to recognize the vital role of farmers and fisherfolk in the national economy.

And here's where it gets interesting: The MCE emphasized the government's bold steps towards agricultural transformation. President John Dramani Mahama's administration is driving change, with initiatives like agro-industrial hubs and the Feed Ghana Programme (FGP). These efforts have already shown remarkable results, reducing national food inflation from a staggering 61% in 2023 to a more manageable 9.5% in October 2025.

Yilo Krobo is actively contributing to this success. The municipality has engaged 211 farmer groups, totaling 4,220 farmers, through the FGP. Additionally, they've distributed thousands of oil palm and coconut seedlings, and collaborated with the UN University to establish a climate-friendly gari processing center. The MCE believes these actions are vital for Ghana's food sovereignty.

But the story doesn't end there. The MP announced exciting developments, including a health insurance scheme for cocoa farmers and improved road infrastructure to key farming areas. The ceremony also recognized excellence in various agricultural sectors, from cassava and rice to livestock and youth farming. The Best Farmer received a tricycle, farming equipment, and other resources, while runners-up were also generously rewarded.

The celebration concluded with a call to action. The chairman emphasized the importance of supporting youth in agriculture, ensuring financial assistance for their ventures. He also requested government aid for community projects, such as a police station and a community center.

This Farmers' Day event in Yilo Krobo showcased a united front, with leaders, farmers, and institutions dedicated to building a resilient and prosperous agricultural future for Ghana. But the question remains: How can we ensure this momentum continues, and what role can the public play in supporting these efforts?
